The Richmond Sockeyes of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League, have declareda spot in history once again. It hasn't been the first time that this well known hockey club has went all the way, but is happened once again.Coming back for a new season of 2008/2009, after losing game 7 against Grandview Steelers to make it into the final round of the playoffs last year, the Sockeyes have pulled through from one of their best seasons ever this year to make it into the Championship rounds. I am proud to say that the Richmond Sockeyes have captured all 3 titles of the Junior B hockey League this year.
PIJHL Championship - Richmond, B.C. / Abbotsford, B.C.
Cyclone Taylor Cup- Richmond, B.C.
Keystone Cup Western Canadian Championships- Thunder Bay, Ontario
From the Sockeyes winning their pool in the PIJHL they went on to face Abbotsford in the final round for the PIJHL Championship. Although the series was back and forth, Sockeyes managed to come out of it and be victorious, and got titled PIJHL Champions. From then on they went to the Cyclone Taylor Cup which was hosted in Richmond at the Minoru Arena. They had defeated the Nelson leafs in the final game, after losing to them in a round robin game earlier that week. Once again the Sockeyes came out victorious, and got titled Cyclone Taylor Cup Champions. As they won the titleof the Cyclone Taylor Cup, the boys and coaching staff knew what it meant, they had another week of hockey to look forward to. They would be off to Thunder Bay, Ontario to represent British Columbia at the Keystone Cup Western Canadian Championships. The boys and coaching staff had two things on their mind, represent British Columbia the best they could, and to hopefully come home champions. From playing two games a day, the Sockeyes were all set to enter the final game against the K&A Wolverines. The Sockeyes had faced the K&A Wolverines a day before, and had lost. The Sockeyes came out on the final day when it counted and showed they knew what was at stake. They came to play hard and represent British Columbia as well as they could, and they achieved that. After a long 6 periods, Clayton Chessa knocked the puck in at the net to declare the Richmond Sockeyes as the winners! The Richmond Sockeyes right then and there knew they had captured once again another title, the biggest one. The Keystone Cup Western Canadian Champions were the Richmond Sockeyes! They were full of tears and smiles all around, the players, the coaching staff, the owners, the fans, it was a great feeling.
What a way to end the season! Congratulations go to the team of 2008/2009 Richmond Sockeyes. We are so proud of you, and couldn't ask for anything more. You represented British Columbia as well as you ever could.
