Arizona State University has been a full-fledged member of NCAA Div. I hockey for eight seasons now and head coach Greg Powers has been the man behind the bench for the whole ride.
The Sun Devils under Powers have been strong recruiters in Western Canada and in B.C. particularly with six players over the past two seasons either from or having played Junior hockey in Canada’s westernmost province.
On Monday night, in advance of the inaugural BCHC Prospects Game, Powers joined the event’s players and organizers remotely and shared his take on the development path available to the players about to suit up and offered a look into what it’s been like this season for his team sharing an arena with the NHL’s Coyotes.
Powers noted the opportunities available to Junior players in B.C. and how his team has benefitted from having players who traveled a growth curve very similar to those suiting up in Tuesday’s Prospects Game.
The BCHC Prospects Game will be a good chance for young players in the PJHL and KIJHL to get noticed by Junior teams at the next level and possibly pave their own path forward. Almost all 18 BCHL franchises are expected to have scouts present on Tuesday as they look to build their rosters for coming seasons.
Coaches like Powers will be keeping an eye on how the young players develop as he makes plans for his roster into the future as well.
